Thanks to a reading in my "Fibers and Material Studies" course, my interest in Greek Mythology has been recently reignited. The reading was on the life and work of Dorothea Tanning, and fantastic artist who, in her lifetime, was eclipsed by her husband: Max Ernst. Of all her beautiful pieces, it was the painting Chiens de Cythere that caught my eye. The title made me think of something, but I couldn't quite remember what or why. After some more research, I discovered it was based on the poem Voyage to Cythera by Charles Baudelaire. It was now that I remembered Cythera was the supposed island that Aphrodite first landed on when birthed from the sea foam, and at this point the subject matter an imagery got me hooked. I dove headfirst into a rabbit hole and in the course of two weeks created about 300 thumbnails for different drawings, paintings, sculptures, etc., that I wanted to make, and I have already begun on three of them, and just completed one.
